That Day

When – you’re in lockdown, you’ve been ill, still not properly recovered, feeling low, you sit in the garden with a cup of tea just to get some fresh air, pick a few, three or four, small flowers because you miss flowers so much, put them in a jug just to have by your chair, come inside to a message from a friend to say a delivery is on its way, and another message from Verde Flowers telling you to ‘look out for a man in a red van with buckets of flowers in the back,’ and suddenly you know what friendship and kindness is, and you can’t stop the tears, you really can’t – that day!

  1. Dear Avril, I am so glad the flowers brought you comfort and an upwelling of what I hope was positive emotion! Gillian Allnutt’s poem ‘Golden Saxifrage’ started such a delightful swell of good feeling in me and brought such wonderful responses from my friends, starting with your post. It has been a great antidote to the oppressive times in which we find ourselves. I treasure your friendship and find it such a natural, easy, privilege to hold.

    1. The flowers have been a constant joy. Thank you, thank you! I love that Gillian’s poem has reached out into the world and brought you and others such a swell of good feeling, at this time – you deserve to be celebrated x
