#Higgs- So Small but so Huge!

CERN press Release; ‘Geneva, 4 July 2012. At a seminar held at CERN1 today…the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented their latest preliminary results in the search for the long sought Higgs particle. Both experiments observe a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV.’

We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

AMAZING! Now I don’t pretend to understand particle physics but I can still get very excited about a discovery that teaches us more about the world, or should I say universe in which we live.

#Higgs has been trending all day on Twitter: Here are three things I learned…

1. Stephen Hawking lost $100 on a bet with a fellow scientist that the Higgs boson would not be found he can be seen smiling here

2. That the CERN presentation was given in comic sans font seemd to upset a lot of folk but I agree with Gedeon Maheux@gedeon When you discover one of the elementary particles of the physical universe, you get to use whatever font you want, for life.

3. Former science minister, William Waldegrave, offered a prize in 1993 for the best lay explanation of the Higgs boson. Professor David Miller, of UCL, won the prize with the following analogy.Click HEREnow this I understand!
