Starting Something New

I have space to write something new, time stretches out before me unbroken until who knows when. Something new – I have time without pressure, no excuse, but what and how? And can I shut down that nagging voice in my head that says, ‘But what’s the point? Who’s going to to read it anyway? There are so many successful books already out there, maybe you should try writing something more commercial.’

In my experience there’s only one way to silence that voice and that’s to begin, start small and ‘build a corner,’ as Dani Shapiro advises in Still Writing, The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life. ‘One word. One image. One detail. Go ahead. Then see what happens next.’

Still Writing has some of the best advice out there for writers, so if you don’t have a copy I suggest you get one – it’s a joy to read.

Of course the more that’s at stake – will this be any good, will it be published etc. etc. the harder it is to start, so on Dani Shapiro’s advice I’m going to write a ‘short, bad book.’ Now there’s nothing riding on that, is there? Anyone can do it. Can’t they? Wish me luck…or join me if you fancy it.

This is my daughter taking her time to make her beautiful paintings – you can find her stationery including delightful Easter Cards HERE it’s a great time to support small businesses like hers if you can
